Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

We have been mightily remiss in not adding this one to Mesquites Rule! It Be Here Now!

Born To Be Wild

Here's the quintessential riff of Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda riding through Sunset Crater National Monument.  Yep, you get some bonus Flagstaff scenes, too.  We can't embed the video, so you just have to click the link:

Gotta Know

It's been about 35 years since we adopted The Kenny Roger's Rules of Life:

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run

Carry On

Year 2013's Beaver Creek Fire near Ketchum-Sun Valley in Idaho's Wood River Valley spawned some awesome creativity on the part of that area's video artists.  Dates Fryberger put up an incredible montage of other people's photos and set it to the music of "Carry On'' By Fun.

You can see the video here:  http://vimeo.com/72705351

We love the tune "Carry On" and it seems so appropriate for a heart-wrenching wild land fire situation.
So, when The Slide Fire struck our beloved Oak Creek Canyon, "Carry On" has been echoing in our mind 24/7.

As a result, we decided to archive the tune here so that we can play it any time we want.

Here are the lyrics--a link to the official music video is below (with a disclaimer).

"Carry On"

Well I woke up to the sound of silence
And cries were cutting like knives in a fist fight
And I found you with a bottle of wine
Your head in the curtains
And heart like the Fourth of July

You swore and said,
"We are not,
We are not shining stars."
This I know,
I never said we are

Though I've never been through hell like that
I've closed enough windows to know you can never look back

If you're lost and alone
Or you're sinking like a stone.
Carry on.
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground.
Carry on.

Carry on, carry on

So I met up with some friends at the edge of the night
At a bar off 75.
And we talked and talked about how our parents will die,
All our neighbours and wives.

But I like to think I can cheat it all
To make up for the times I've been cheated on.
And it's nice to know when I was left for dead
I was found and now I don't roam these streets,
I am not the ghost you are to me.

If you're lost and alone
Or you're sinking like a stone.
Carry on.
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground.
Carry on.

Whoa!
My head is on fire but my legs are fine.
After all they are mine.
Lay your clothes down on the floor,
Close the door, hold the phone,
Show me how no one’s ever gonna stop us tonight.

'Cause here we are
We are shining stars
We are invincible
We are who we are
On our darkest day
When we’re miles away
Sun will come
We will find our way home

If you're lost and alone
Or you're sinking like a stone.
Carry on.
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground.
Carry on.

Oooh.
Oooh.
Oooh.
Oooh.

(No one's ever gonna stop us tonight)
(No one's ever, no one's ever gonna stop, no one's ever gonna stop us tonight)
(No one's ever, no one's ever gonna stop, no one's ever gonna stop, no one's ever gonna stop us tonight)

OK, how here is the YouTube video.  As of May 29, it has 39.3-MILLION views!  Bear in mind that there is at least a PG-rated commercial that leads into the video.  Also, there is a lot of drinking and apparent drunkenness in the music video.  We mention this out of Respect for our Dear Sober Friends who might be offended by this sort of behavior.  We are currently trying to find a rendition of the song that does not contain those sorts of images.

Time Has Come Today

The Chambers Brothers made such great use of the cowbell--
LONG before the phrase "more cowbell" made it into the lexicon.

Go to CHURCH

NOTE: The excerpt of the lyrics below the Bomb Flow magazine video are Copyright Alison Krauss. The Boyz at Bomb Flow Magazine have added a whole new adaptation of Alison's lyrics in their classic kayaking video "Go To CHURCH."

Bomb Flow TV Episode 9 "Go to CHURCH" from BombFlowTV

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way !

O sisters let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down,
O sisters let's go down,
Down in the river to pray.

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way !

O brothers let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down,
Come on brothers let's go down,
Down in the river to pray.

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way !

O fathers let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down,
O fathers let's go down,
Down in the river to pray.

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way !

We published this post a couple of years ago but brought it to the top today--8/23/13 and again 7/11/15.

Twist a tune

Won't Back Down is one of our favorite tunes of All Time!

And here's  an awesome rendition of "I Won't Back Down."

It was performed at the 2008 Super Bowl Halftime show.  You can click here to play a protected YouTube video of his tune.

These lyrics fit today's 2016 situation so perfectly.

Well I won't back down, no I won't back down
you could stand me up at the gates of hell
but I won't back down

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around
and I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

Chorus
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
hey I will stand my ground
and I won't back down

Well I know what's right, I got just one life
in a world that keeps on pushin' me around
but I'll stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby there ain't no easy way out
hey I will stand my ground
and I won't back down
No, I won't back down

(Editor's Note--This tune was posted August 2011 and moved to the top two years later. And them bumped once again in March 2016.)

HMS Bounty Rescue

This is a Classic US Coast Guard rescue conducted this morning.  I have tried all sorts of techniques to get this "B Roll" video to work.  The best solution I can find is to click on the link below.  You may have to wait some time for it to load--it is getting hit really hard by internet users around the planet.

Be sure to use the "Full Screen" option.

The Rescue Swimmer you see is Randy Haba.  The US Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer program is possibly even tougher than the US Navy SEAL program.

Here are two links on the Rescue Swimming qualifications

What you are seeing here is a Super Human Being performing Other Worldly Acts of Individual Heroism.

Howling Wolves

On July 25, 2012, an ODFW wolf biologist on a survey for wolf pups took this video of a Snake River wolf pack pup howling. The video was taken in the Summit Ridge area within the Snake River Wildlife Management Unit, in Wallowa County. In the video, the pup howls three times. A low returning howl is heard and the pup gets up. Then, other members of the wolf pack (not seen in the video) return the pup’s howls. Wolves are highly social animals and howling is a common behavior that help packs communicate and stay together. Wolf howls can be heard from several miles away.

Lyrical

The sound of distant lyrics often fills our minds.  Haunting echos of times long gone by.

Memories

Like the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me - Would we? Could we?

Memories
May be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply to choose to forget

So it is the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were

So it is the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were
